Additional Property Attributes

The Village of Lower Kalskag applied to the Alaska Department of Environmental Conservation DEC for a DEC Brownfield Assessment DBA during the spring 2008 DBA request period. The property is not actively used but the tanks and the structure remain. There was significant community concern regarding historical releases at the tank farm. The results of the site assessment identified soil contamination is present in excess of the DEC cleanup level for diesel for the inhalation, ingestion and migration to groundwater pathways. One groundwater well is located 100 feet southwest of the tank farm and the present city water supply well Well No. 2 is located approximately 200 feet northwest of the tank farm. The depth to groundwater is estimated to be on the order of 25 to 30 feet bgs. The Kuskokwim River is located about 650 feet southeast of the site.

Former Use: The former AVEC power plant and tank farm are owned by AVEC. The City of Lower Kalskag owns the property. Based on the information from the site characterization, the site is believed to have operated as a power generation facility from 1969 to December 2004 when a new plant became operational. The historical aerial photos indicated that at one time the tank farm contained eight to ten aboveground storage tanks (ASTs) within a bermed gravel pad. A building, the power generation facility, is adjacent to the tank farm.
