Additional Property Attributes

In the Spring of 2008, the Koyukuk Tribal Council applied to the Alaska Department of Environmental Conservation DEC for a DEC Brownfield Assessment for the Former Generator Building in Koyukuk. This site historically has had multiple fuel releases. In 2008 the Yukon River Inter-Tribal Watershed Council YRITWC hired a consultant to conduct a Phase I and Limited Phase II Site Assessment on the site. The subject property has previously operated as the city's primary power plant and at least two prior releases were reported. In addition, several overtuned drums and associated surface staining were observed. Contamination exceeding DEC cleanup levels were identified in the soils to the south fo the generator building and in near-surface soils associated with the drum releases. The community water well is the only registered water well located for the Koyukuk area. The well log indicates frozen silty sand and sandy silt from 1 foot below ground surface to 28 feet bgs.First water was indicated at 35 to 53 feet bgs. Below 53 feet bgs, gravels, heaving sands, and silts are encountered with bedrock between 186 to 190 feet bgs. According to the report done for YRITWC, contamination south of the building appears to extend to permafrost, which is approximately 6 feet bgs. The consultant estimates approximately 200 cubic yards of soil have been impacted. Contammination consists primarily of diesel range organics DRO, residual range organics RRO, gasoline range organics GRO, benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene, xylenes, and naphthalene.

Former Use: The Koyukuk Former Generator Building is owned by the City of Koyukuk. A tank farm was located adjacent to and south of the former generator building the school and washeteria building are across Vista Road to the west of the subject property. An aboveground pipeline that supplied fuel to both the former generator building and the school tank farm extends east-west under Vista Road. The focus of this assessment was the former generator building which is currently not in use but is located in the center of town and in close proximity to the school, city offices, city well, and the washeteria.
