Additional Property Attributes

Prior to 1974 the site was used as a local dump where solid waste was openly placed and burned. Much of the site appears to be wetlands. From the mid-1970's to the late 1990's, a Mr. Irving Baltuff operated an unpermitted landfill known as Baltuff Disposal Services, Inc. at the site. Wastes placed on the site were subjected to open burning, resulting in a large quantity of ash and metallic debris. Records indicate that Mr. Baltuff had a lengthy regulatory history with the Florida Department of Environmental Protection which issued him a number of warning letters, citations and notices of violation. In 1999, Mr. Baltuff donated the property to the Habitat for Humanity. In 2007, Monroe County designated the site as a Brownfields area in accordance with state law.
