Additional Property Attributes

The property consists of approximately 116 acres and three large buildings that were once used by the State of Michigan as a mental hospital. One entire side of the property borders the Cass River. The Tuscola County EDC has worked with several local organizations, community groups, and local units of government in the possible acquisition of the property. Adamant opposition to acquiring the property was present within the local units of government. To quote one local government official, all the money in the world could not clean up this property. Environmental assessments with EPA grant funds were able to quantify the actual cleanup costs, which were estimated at 160,000, a manageable number. Tuscola County and the State of Michigan are moving forward with evaluation of the property transfer and benefits to the public of Tuscola County.

Former Use: The subject property was utlized as part of a State Mental Hospital for the 1910s until the 1990s. Four structures are present at the site. Remaining portions of the property are wooded and contained dwellings in the 1940s and 1950s.
