Additional Property Attributes

The building is a three-story structure with a basement and a shingled roof (Photo 4). The east side of the building has a two story section that is approximately 2/3 the length of the restof the building (Photo 7). The building is located in a commercial and residential neighborhood on the east side of the town of Rosebud, South Dakota (Fig. 2). The building issurrounded by a sidewalk, and a grassy yard covers the remainder of the property (Photos 1 and &). Former Use: In 1903, the Old SGU property became BIA Agency Reserve Statusland. The Old SGU building was built in 1935 for use as the BIA Rosebud Agency Offices. Some time prior to 1981, the building was briefly used as a shelter and a hotel. In 1982, theproperty was redeveloped as the Sinte Gleska University. In 2003, the building was abandoned as an unheated building. A number of environmental investigations have beenconducted at the property since 2003. Some time after 2004, hazards in the building were partially abated (some asbestos-containing materials (ACMs), PCB ballasts, mercury lightfixtures and small containers of waste). The most current assessment indicates that lead-based paint and ACMs are still present in the building and that lead is present in soils aroundthe building at levels that exceed EPA regional screening levels for lead.
