Additional Property Attributes

A linseed oil plant mill, which operated until approximately 1860, is the first use known of the Site. The exact location of the linseed oil mill is unknown. A mill at the Site operated by William Marston and Thomas Chubb produced pitchfork and rake handles for a short period of time approximately 2 years in the 1860s. Mr. Chubb subsequently purchased the Site and used the mill to produce hexagonal fly fishing rods in the late 1860s. The building was reconstructed in 1869 following a flood that destroyed the original building. After a fire destroyed the building in 1875, it was rebuilt following another fire in 1891, Thomas Chubb sold the property and company to Montague City Rod Company, which continued to produce T.H. Chubb fishing rods until the early 1930s. After a period of dormancy from approximately 1933 to 1938, the fishing rod factory was purchased by Walter Malmquist the grandfather of the current owner, Walter Malmquist in 1938, and the mill was adapted to produce round bobbins for thread. Bobbin production continued through the 1950s. Most recently from the 1950s through the late 1990s, the mill was used to produce rough-cut dimensional wood products used in furniture manufacturing.

Former Use: The mill was constructed in the 1800s, and has been out of use since 1999. Much of the mill building has fallen into disrepair since the active operation of the mill, and the roof has caved in at several locations.
