Additional Property Attributes

The City is currently seeking funds to conduct asbestos abatement activities and deconstruct the former school building in order to build a community center on-site. The City has already secured a 200,000 EPA Brownfields Cleanup Grant, a 200,000 USDA grant, a 75,000 Iowa Department of Natural Resources Derelict Buildings Grant, and a 50,000 forgivable loan from the Iowa Department of Economic Development for the project. Community fund raising has raised 450,000 for Commnity Center. Donations include capital fund campaign, wagon loads of corn, school alumni donations.

Former Use: Originally built in 1920, the Arlington School was an impressive solid-brick, three-story structure. The building includes a gymnasium and approximately 13,540 square-feet of total space. The school required several additions over the years to accommodate a growing student population, the last occurring in 1960. In the early 1960s Arlington consolidated with surrounding rural communities to form the Starmont School District. Soon after the merger the new district designated the structure for use solely as an elementary school. The last class of graduating high school students from Arlington School occurred in 1963. The school permanently closed its doors in the early 1980s. A combination of declining enrollment, increasing maintenance costs, and the large investment required to make the structure handicap-accessible provided little justification to keep the building in operation.
