Additional Property Attributes

- This property has been approved into the NC Brownfields program. - Cleanup planning includes the preparation of an ABCA for the site.

Former Use: The property consists of a 6.65-acre land parcel that is now predominantly covered in grass with a few trees. A former railroad spur crossed the central portion of the site in an approximate northwest-southeast direction. A 90,000-sq ft main mill building built in the 1860s stood on-site near the northeastern corner of the property until it was razed in 2006. The building contained two main floors and a basement which appears to have had a dirt floor. A 9,333-sq ft building is currently located in the southeastern corner of the property. This building was originally constructed in 1925 to replace three separate smaller warehouses formerly located in the same locale. The eastern portion of the building contains a basement and a first floor, and the western portion of the building only contains a first floor. The building has been vacant since 2006 and has been heavily vandalized. The subject property is currently vacant and inactive. The subject site was reportedly developed in the 1860s by Ivey Weavers, Inc. as a textile mill and remained an active textile mill until the mid 1960s when it was reportedly used as a warehouse for dry storage of furniture. In 1987, S&W Chemicals, Inc. S&W purchased the property. S&W bought chemicals in bulk and then packaged for them for resale. S&W used the main mill building for storage of chemicals and used the warehouse for offices and laboratory space. S&Ws owner, Mr. Whitener, sold the S&W operations in 2002, but retained the property. In 2006, the main mill building was razed leaving only the office/laboratory building. As stated above, the office/laboratory building has been vacant since 2006.
