Additional Property Attributes

Suspect asbestos containing materials and lead based paint identified. Surveys for asbestos or lead should be conducted prior to renovation or demolition activities at the site.

Former Use: The Property is currently occupied with two buildings, the former Vermillion County jail and a garage. The former jail has two floors, a basement and an attic. The first floor consists of offices, show cases, tables, chairs, a kitchen, stair cases, cell blocks, restrooms, and hallways. The second floor of the jail consists of vacant and non vacant rooms, hallway, stair case to the attic, and cell blocks. The attic is vacant, and the basement contains a former water tank that has been cut open, paint cans, 5 gallon buckets, and piping. The garage consists of a storage area that holds desks, chairs, boxes and other miscellaneous debris. The garage is located on the northwest corner of the Property. Exterior areas of the Property include grass and concrete sidewalks which make up the remainder of the Property. According to the site contact, a heating oil aboveground storage tank AST used to be located in the basement. The fill and vent for the AST were formerly located on the north side of the building. Evidence of a release from the filling of the tank was not noted. The Property appears to have been used as a county jail since circa 1905. The Property is currently owned by the Vermillion County Historical Society. Prior ownership includes The Board of County Commissioners of Vermillion County.
