Additional Property Attributes

Maralco has been a classic "brownfields" property for almost 20 years. The major impediment to redevelopment is the cost to dispose of the 28,000 cubic yards of black dross. Estimates for offsite disposal range from $1.1 to over 7 million dollars- far above the value of the property. In 2004 a developer is proposing to spread the dross over the entire property on a geomembrane then cap it. This is not acceptable to the city of Kent and others because of the potential to contaminate wetlands (and associated salmon bearing streams) in the area with metals and evaluate the pH of surface water.

Former Use: Aluminum recycling facility, storage of residue, abandoned/vacant since 1986. Approximately 20,000 cu. yds. of black dross remains stockpiled at the facility. Known impacts to surface water and sediments. Suspected impacts to soil and groundwater. Further, known petroleum impacts to soil and suspected to groundwater from former 35,000-gal diesel UST.
