Additional Property Attributes

Currently owned by the City of East St. Louis, the former Broadview Hotel has been vacant for at least five years. The structure was built in 1927 as a hotel and has been used for office, medical, and educational purposes. Deeded to the City by Southern Illinois University-Edwardsville, the site is located adjacent to the East St. Louis Metro Link station and is being considered for redevelopment as apartments and commercial/retail. An application has been submitted to the Illinois Housing Development Authority for funding. This application required an updated Phase I, the reason this assessment was requested. Additionally, the developers are in the process of qualifying the site for the National Historic Register, allowing the use of Federal Historic Preservation Tax Credits.

Former Use: The property has been used residentially and commercially since at least 1905. Originally built as the Broadview Hotel, this hotel was operated from 1927 to approximately 1959. In the 1960s it was used as medical offices. The property was owned and operated by Southern Illinois University-Edwardsville in the 1990s. The University deeded it to the City of East St. Louis circa 2008.
