Additional Property Attributes

This site is part of the famous former Vermont Marble Company headquarters in downtown Proctor, Vermont. This property was part of a larger group of properties which were used for marble processing. Trains would drop marble in large chunks off at the site from the quarry up the road. The marble was unloaded using large machinery such as cranes and hydraulic lifts and broken down into smaller pieces on-site andtransported approximately 50 yards to the finishing facility now on a separate parcel, where a Phase I ESA has been completed. The marble that did not make it to the finishing facility was discarded in piles which are still present throughout the site. Some of the infrastructure from the unloading station and spur line is still present, although overgrown with vegetation. Site contamination results from the marble processing operatins and trains traversing the site full of varying types of material, the lifts and cranes needed to unload the stone, the machinery used to cut the marble and general industrial nature of the operations. Later site contamination, after the marble processing operations ceased, is suspected due to the numerous debris piles currently on the site which include rusted out drums, 5-gal. plastic buckets, appliances, tires and other "modern" day waste. Contamination from the debris piles probably takes the form of hazardous substances, but could also include petroleum. A UST has been discovered in the northern portion of the property. The property owner will enroll the site in the VT DEC Petroleum Cleanup Fund. An Area-wide plan will be conducted for the Proctor Village Center encompassing the property.

Former Use: Past uses on the 6.5-acre site include ancilliary operations for a marble processing facility, which operated on an adjacent parcel. The site has reminants of an old rail spur line and associated infrastructure, and piles of marble in varying states scattered throughout the property. Currently, the site is mostly overgrown and there are other debris piles which have accumulated over the years, not associated with the marble processing operations.
