Additional Property Attributes

Former Use: The Property was undeveloped land from at least 1938 to approximately 1950. By 1950, the Property was included in the Fort Custer military base and was developed with six structures and a railroad spur. Reportedly, the structures were used by the military as warehouses for food preparation, packing, and cold storage. The Property continued to be occupied by warehouses until 1964 when the Fort Custer military base was closed. In 1971, a portion of the Fort Custer military base, including the Property, was sold to the City of Battle Creek for redevelopment into the Fort Custer Industrial Park. In 1972, Burdick Packing Co. purchased the Property from the City of Battle Creek. In approximately 1974, all the warehouses but the refrigeration warehouse located on the northwest corner of the Property had been razed and Burdick Packing Co. had remodeled the northwest warehouse building for use as cold storage and meat packing. The warehouse building was utilized for cold storage and meat packing by Burdick Packing Co. from 1971 until 2008. The garage was constructed in 1979 and was used for truck and lawn equipment maintenance until 2008. From 2008 to SMEs reconnaissance in 2010, the warehouse was vacant.
