Additional Property Attributes

Redevelopment of this property has resulted in the refurbishment of a historic site in the Village of Hersey, dating back to the 1800s. In addition, this development has resulted in brining other new business into the Village of Hersey, serving as a general store, and ice cream shop; as well as housing up to 20 local crafters in the upper floors. In addition, a former summer tenant, a local greenhouse/nursery business that started out selling plants on this property, has now opened in a new location in Hersey.

Former Use: The eastern portion of the subject property was originally developed with a portion of the J. Edwards sawmill as early as 1893. The western portion of the subject property contained boxed flume which supplied water from the Mill Race across North Main Street to the original Hersey Roller Mill located along 2nd Street. Prior to 1904, the sawmill was razed, and the existing Hersey Roller Mill building was constructed. During that time the northern portion of the subject property was excavated to construct a head race, and the southeastern portion of the subject property was excavated to construct a tail race. Water from the Mill Race was directed into the head race on the subject property, which fed into two water wheel turbines that turned a generator located east of the subject building. The subject property reportedly supplied the Village of Hersey with electricity from 1904 through 1942 when Consumers Energy began supplying electricity to Hersey. The mill operated until the mid 1940s when it was vacated. Reportedly, the subject property also sold gasoline out of a small UST located west of the subject building. The subject property has remained vacant since the mid 1940s, with the exception of the driveway for the northeastern adjoining residence which was constructed on the subject property in the 1970s.
