Additional Property Attributes

The property was split from a larger former industrial site. The space is intended to be used as public greenspace with anticiapted construction of a multi-modal pathway along the St. Joseph River.

Former Use: The subject property consists of one legal parcel occupying five acres along the St. Joseph River. Until recently, it was part of a larger parcel of land, commonly known as the Former Essex Wire Site. The Former Essex Wire Site was originally developed in the mid-1800s for industrial purposes. It has been occupied by industrial operations since that time, including the Sheffield Velocipede Car Co., Fairbanks-Morse, and the Essex Wire Company. After the Essex Wire Company ceased its copper smelting and wire production operations in 1980, Decatur Elevator utilized the site for grain storage. The City acquired the property through tax reversion after Decatur Elevator abandoned the property in 1992. In 2010, the subject property was split from the parent parcel by the City of Three Rivers and is now a separate parcel. The City plans to use the property to develop a 2,150-linear-foot walkway and bike path along the St. Joseph River.
