Additional Property Attributes

The assessment was conducted to facilitate the extension ofthe Chippewa Trail within the City of Caro. Caro is continuing with development of the Chippewa Bridge and Trail Project, which includes a hard surfaced trail loop with a non-motorized bridge spanning the Cass River. This loop will be the first of its kind within Tuscola County and will ultimately serve to link waterfront areas. An environmental assessment completed with previous EPA grant funds assisted in the acquisition of a parcel of land to continue the trail. The long-term plan also includes two fishing decks, benches, and restroom facilities.

Former Use: The property was developed by the late 1800s for coal storage as part of a rail corridor. By 1910 the property was owned by Standard Oil and aboveground storage tanks were located on the property. By 1920 an oil warehouse was located on the property. The State of Michigan conducted a cleanup to remove the USTs at the property in the late 1990s.
