Additional Property Attributes

The Morton Medical Center in north Tulsa was constructed in 1931 and was operated as a hospital and neighborhood clinic for the African American population until desegregation and then as a community wide hospital until 2006. It was a health hazard mainly due to asbestos issues and is subject to vandalism and trespass by homeless individuals. Cleanup and redevelopment of the site will reduce crime, improve the social and economic environment of the area and help put the property back on the City?s tax rolls. It is also very important to recognize and preserve the history of the property. The site is in an urban renewal plan area with great in-fill redevelopment potential. The property has not been redeveloped as of August 2017. Due to various project delays, the City of Tulsa had to work round the clock to finish the asbestos abatement project prior to DEQ's ARRA RLF grant expiring. They finished the abatement within days of grant expiration. They had to bring in asbestos abatement crews from out of state to work on the project. A total of 34 different people worked in shifts to complete the asbestos abatement project. DEQ's ARRA RLF subgrant provided $327,778.66 for the asbestos abatement and removal of a small fuel storage tank located in the basement. The fuel storage tank was empty at the time of removal and was determined to be under DEQ's jurisdiction.

Former Use: The City of Tulsa aquired title to portions of the site in 1931 and the rest in 1979. The Morton Center built in 1931 was operated as a hospital and neighborhood clinic for African Americans until 2006. The site and 3 onsite buildings are currently vacant.

On August 2, 2023, a 1970s addition was dismantled to expose the original historic building to be redeveloped as an entrepreneurship incubator.
