Additional Property Attributes

Former Use: This property lies within Section 34, Township 48 North, Range 4 West and is approximately 0.41 acres. It is located on the north side of 6th Street East, just east of the intersection of 6th Street East and 22nd Avenue West in Ashland County, Ashland, Wisconsin. The property is a portion of the 23rd Avenue right-of-way and sits south of the Timeless Timber facility located at 2200 Lake Shore Drive East, and is located in a mixed residential and commercial area northeast of the downtown area of the City of Ashland. The property is currently undeveloped. Surrounding properties were originally platted for residential purposes in the late 1800�s. This property was likely constructed to serve as access to these properties. Aerial photographs indicate that the north portion of the property contained a constructed road 23rd Avenue as early as 1939. This road was present as late as 1970, but was abandoned following railroad spur development on adjacent surrounding properties by 1989. No chain of ownership Title Records are available for this property however, property ownership information provided by the City of Ashland during completion of the Brownfields Site Eligibility Determination, and based on previous Phase I ESA information, indicates the property was first acquired by the City of Ashland and the Ashland School District around 1965. This property was likely City right-of-way property at the time the surrounding properties were platted and the road system put in place thus, it was likely city owned by the early 1880�s. Various transactions with private companies Beloit Hilbob Corporation and Continental Forest Products occurred between 1965 and 1978. Before 1978, the City appeared to get the property back presumably based on bankruptcy or tax delinquency.
