Additional Property Attributes

Former school closed since 2005. Proposed reuse as a charter school and entrepreneur incubator. Bayou Treme Center recently announced a partnership with Southern Rep to house the performing arts organization in the cathedral at the site. Former Use: Property was a former church and school complex. The school closed in the 1970s and the church closed due to population shifts in 2005. After Hurricane Katrina, the school buildings were used as a distribution center for food and supplies to the surrounding neighborhood. The Rose Collaborative (formerly Bayou Treme Center) nonprofit purchased and, in coordination with Alembic Community Development, redeveloped the site. The church is the new home for Southern Rep Theatre with three unique performance spaces for local playwrights. One of the school buildings is now home to the Waldorf School of New Orleans which promotes a natural and exploratory learning process. The other school building houses a variety of local businesses and nonprofits with space and services to support local entrepreneurs. The redevelopment fits well with the revitalization of the Bayou Road corridor with its growing number of locally- and African-American-owned businesses. The Regional Planning Commission provided funding for the assessment and cleanup planning phases of the project. LDEQ provided key funding to address lead, asbestos and avian fecal matter. Other LDEQ AIs for the site include: 179825; 207493; 179826; 213371; and 177598.
