Additional Property Attributes

During the Oct. 2010 field activities, the playground was located north of the school building rather than on the old tank farm location. The discontinuous polyethylene sheet liner was encountered at depths varying between 0.6 and 2 feet beneath sand and gravel pad. Based on the data from 1996 and 2010, there are petroleum hydrocarbons below the surface at the location of the former tank farm. The concentrations detected are less than the current DEC Arctic Zone cleanup levels. Migration of petroleum impacted water from the gravelly soil to surface water in the surrounding tundra is likely to be the highest exposure risk.

Former Use: Two sites were investigated: one was the former location of a fuel tank farm for the old Selawik School and the other site was the old school storage pad. The sites are located in the northwestern portion of Selawik, at the southwestern corner of the new Davis-Ramoth school building. The former tank farm was used to store fuel for heating the former school, and was decommissioned for the 1996-1997 construction of the new Selawik School. The tank farm may also have supplied fuel to the water treatment plant/washeteria. Both parcels are owned by NANA under IC 552. Plat 98-6 is leased by the Northwest Arctic Borough.
