Additional Property Attributes

The Village of Broadlands was incorporated in March of 1902 on lands previously owned by the Sullivant family. The Sullivant family were the owners of a farm that totaled over 70,000 acres and located within Champaign and Vermilion Counties. This farm was believed to be one of the largest farms in the world at the time of its existence. The property that was later to become the Village of Broadlands, was sold to John Alexander in 1866, and was broken up upon his death in 1876 to pay his creditors. There is little historic information available for the BLB General Corporation site. Historic Sanborn fire insurance maps suggests that prior to 1914 the property appeared to have corn cribs located on it. Anecdotal information provided by local citizens suggests that the property was used as a service station and later added a small general store in the 1960s, 70s and early 80s. In 2009, the OSFM cited the owner of the property, Thomas Opal, for violations related to the underground storage tanks at the property. One such violation appears to be a general underground storage tank, out of service violation. The other violation is regarding the registration of the tanks and paying the associated fees.
