An expanded Phase I environmental site assessment was performed on the Tonopah Convention Center that included the investigation and sampling of building materials for asbestos and lead-based paint. The Phase I ESA positively identified the presence of some asbestos-containing materials, although their current condition hs been identified as non-friable. The Town of Tonopah will need to maintain these materials in anon-friable condition until such time as they can be removed and replaced.

Additional Property Attributes

Former Use: The Tonopah Convention Center is a municipally-owned facility built in the 1940s. An expanded Phase I ESA was performed and found asbestos-containing materials in the convention center building and mine tailings and waste rock present on a nearby property. A Phase II ESA was performed to investigate the potential for contamination to the facility's unpaved parking lot by deposition of mine tailings. The Phase II soil investigation did find levels of arsenic above USEPA Region 9 RSL in all samples and one sample that had selehium and silver above USEPA Region 9 RSLs. The Town of Tonopah has been advised that they should determine typical background levels for thes metals in the soil and take appropriate action to mitigate if warranted. Tonopah is actively pursuing an USDA Community Development Initiative grant to renovate and redevelop this property and an adjacent property to increase meeting and event space in the town. They plan to maintain the ACMs identified in the existing convention center in a non-friable condition until they can get the funding to mitigate them in preparation for the building's renovation.
