Additional Property Attributes

Former Use: According to available historical records, the site was initially developed by Mr. Daniel Rugg in the 1770s when a house was constructed. The Gates family operated a farm at the site from the 1840s until the early 1900s. In 1906, the site was acquired by Mr. James Dennett who remodeled the house and constructed the Dennett Workshop. The nature of activities performed at the Dennett Workshop was not documented in available historical records. The Dennett Workshop was converted to a bar, and a restaurant was reportedly constructed at the site in the 1960s. The site buildings were then used as a restaurant, an outdoor trading company, office space, and residential space until 1991, when the site was vacated. MassDOT acquired the site by eminent domain in 1994, and the restaurant building was demolished shortly thereafter. In 2006, the original house, identified as the Rugg-Dennett House, was relocated to its present day location, which is approximately 200 feet northwest of its original location. The site buildings are currently vacant and the site has most recently been used as a public transportation parking lot by MassDOT. A staging area for construction materials and equipment associated with on-going improvements to Worcester Road being performed by MassDOT is present at the site.
