Additional Property Attributes

The City of Montebello Economic Development Department (grantee) requested the TSI to conduct a landfill gas extraction pilot study in a high methane concentration deep zone of a 53 acre former landfill. TSI grant funds totaling 109,950 were allocated over two fiscal years to install a soil vapor extraction well and conduct a vapor extraction pilot study. The TSI determined subsurface methane concentrations in the flammable range requiring further mitigation and it was recommended that further action be taken. The TSI provided the grantee with necessary information to update the conceptual site model, assess the magnitude of methane concentration at depth, and to assist in mitigating a remedy prior to future development.

Former Use: The site is located just north of Interstate 5 at the southern boundary of the City of Montebello. The total site size is about 53 acres and is flat and rectangular in shape. Approximately 20 tilt up, light industrial buildings are currently located on the site and existed since approximately 1987. The former landfill sits along the axis of the site, occupying approximately half the acreage. Historically the site was used for agriculture prior to 1940, landfill operations took place from 1940 to 1955, and from 1960 to 1987 the site was used for chemical blending and mixing.
