Additional Property Attributes

The West Meadows area was formerly a very active industrial rail yard from the 1890's through 1960's. Various rail maintenance facilities were located here, and operations continued until the area became vacant in 2001. The Jordan Creek runs along and through the sites. 75 percent of the property was environmentally contaminated prior to cleanup, primarily with heavy metals (arsenic and lead), PAH's and some VOC's and petroleum. Contamination was attributed to the historical land uses and fill material in the top layers of soil. Through community visioning and planning processes this area is recommended in the Jordan Valley Concept Plan to become public recreational open space with greenway trails, storm water improvements, wetlands, creek and riparian corridor restoration, and planted native grasses, trees and wildflowers, and rail configuration to improve the quality of life for citizens and improve development potential for surrounding property and the West Central Neighborhood through removal of blighting conditions, added amenities, and reducing flooding issues for property in the downtown.
