Additional Property Attributes

Adjacent property is Community Health Center looking to expand because need outpacing available resources

Former Use: From approximately 1900 to 1960, the site was utilized by the Union Hardware Manufacturing company for lumber storage and possibly raw material/waste storage. Use, handling, and storage of petroleum products and hazardous substances in support of the lumber yard operation are suspected. A tailrace for the adjacent industrial property was on or near the subject property but subsequently filled in c. 1906. The eight on-site structures were demolised and replaced with a grocery store in 1967. In the 1990s, the grocery retail operations ceased. Site operations shifted to medical supply house and light manufacturing/assembly. The site and surrounding area may have been subject to industrial filling over the past 100-150 years. The site is currently occupied by Torrington distributors (airplane seat manufacturers) and Pulp Paper. As the site was formerly associated with a lumber mill and most recently for light manufacturing, it is possible that a release has occurred at the property. Addtionally, the up-gradient adjacent property, (formerly Brunswick) historically operated a lagoon to which metals and cynaide wastes were discharged. Soil excavation, natural attenuation, and a possible environmental land use restriction are the known remedial actions to contamination.
