Additional Property Attributes

Former Use: In at least 1917, the subject property was occupied by vacant land. Standard and other historical sources were able to document that the first developed use of the subject property occurred in 1920 with the construction of a gasoline service station on the northeastern portion of the property. The gasoline station operated until at least 1980. Several additional buildings were constructed as additions to the gasoline station building and as separate buildings between 1940 and 1960. Besides the gasoline station and associated automotive service garage, occupants of the property between at least 1948 and 2003 generally consisted of produce and food wholesalers, bakeries, restaurants, and offices, which is consistent with the historical use of the property as a farmers market. In addition, a liquor store was identified on the property from at least 1948 until 1980. A metal fabrication company was also present in the L shaped building (734 East 11th Street) from at least 1980 until 1990. The property is currently occupied by a homeless shelter and the Chattanooga Furniture Bank, which is a non-profit organization that collects furniture for low income families.
