Historical preservation was important to cleanup and redevelopment of the Old Highway Garage property as an adjoining building had a 1906 mural discovered between two brick walls. Redevelopment will preserve the historical character of thie building that was removed and the adjacent building, a former blacksmith shop and livery. Reuse planning is underway through HUD Community Development Block Grant funding. The community has also been substantially involved in this project, with reuse planned for City Hall, the town library, tenant offices, and other community services. (PPF - Old Highway Garage, 3/6/05) Architectural renderings are complete, and funding for the City Hall will most likely be through USDA rural development and Community Development Block Grant. Former Use: Formerly a gasoline station, auto dealership, and radiator shop, the Old Highway Garage has a dilapidated service building covering 95 of the property. Three USTs were located at the front of the building with one 500-gallon AST located in the basement of the building. The AST was used for storage of used oil and auto fluids. The City received the property as a settlement through a court order against the former (now defunct) corporation. The order was filed by the City to remove the dangerous building. Back taxes were over four years in arrears. The building structure had to be removed before a Phase II assessment could be completed.
