Additional Property Attributes

1. The Brownfields cleanup grant will partially fund a project that will benefit the elderly population of Nashua and the surrounding communities that make up the Nashua Regional Planning Commission (Hudson, Litchfield, Pelham, Merrimack, Hollis, Brookline, Milford, Mont Vernon, Lyndeborough, Wilton and Amherst). Having an accessible senior center and elderly housing facility addresses a growing social need given the aging population. Based on the 2000 census data, during 1990 to 2000 New Hampshire was the fastest growing state in the Northeast United States increasing its population by 11.4 percent. During this period, the Nashua region grew by 14.2 percent, outpacing the State. The highest net increase in population (+ 6,943 people) was absorbed by Nashua. The census tract 106 includes the Temple Street area, which grew in population by plus 10.7 percent. Persons per acre in tract 106 changed from 8.1 in 1990 to 9 persons per acre in 2000. There was significant increase in the aged (65 and over) population in Nashua and the Nashua Regional Planning Commission Area during 1990 to 2000. The 65 and over population changed as listed- - Nashua - +24.2 percent; - Nashua Region - +28.3 percent; and - New Hampshire - +18.3 percent. 2. The targeted community will benefit from this grant by enabling the City of Nashua to deal with the environmental constraints associated with constructing a senior center and elderly housing facility in the area of the city most needing it. Available land near the center of Nashua is rare. Most of the remaining unused land in the center of the City has an environmental taint from the previous use. Nashua has a large number of Asbestos Disposal Sites listed by the New Hampshire Department of Environmental Services (95 listed Asbestos Disposal sites which consist of 111 lots).

Former Use: Vacant lot, parking, public playground
