Additional Property Attributes

Former Use: Texas Tanning, located at 3700 N. Grove Street, is an abandoned leather tanning. A leather tanning operation occupied the facility from the late 1960s until 2001. The previous owners and operators left hundreds of drums and other containers of tanning wastes such as flammable liquids, corrosive liquids, oxidizers and other chemicals on the site. There were numerous vats, sumps and tanks onsite that contained tanning operation wastes. Large amounts of other combustibles on site, including wool hides, created a huge fire load. Beginning in February 2002, there were at least four major fires of a suspicious or incendiary nature at the facility. The majority of the buildings were structurally unsound, and some had already collapsed The United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) began an emergency removal action in October 2004, which was completed February 24, 2005. The agency demolished 11 of the 16 buildings that were on the site, set up an on-site waste-water treatment system, pumped and treated approximately half a million gallons of wastewater, solidified chromium-contaminated sludge in the basement areas and excavated it for disposal, backfilled the excavations and covered the areas with top soil. It transported and disposed off-site a wide array of wastes including: solidified sludge, stabilized TPH/DDT solids, salt solids, hazardous and non-hazardous wool hides, asbestos-containing materials, paints, liquid waste, flammable liquids, hazardous waste solids, corrosive liquids, and pesticides. EPA's costs involved with the response action at this site were $2,379,750.00 and resulted in an EPA environmental lien on the property. In addition, the City of Fort Worth spent close to $500,000 on the response.
