Additional Property Attributes

A solar field of nearly 15 acres has been constructed on the property which will provide nearly 30% of the Toledo Zoo's electricity. A total of 69 trees and 173 shrubs have been planted on the site as part of the Great Lakes Restoration Initiative grant the City of Toledo was awarded in 2012. In the fall of 2014, the entire 22 acre property was seeded with a native praire seed mix. Planting of native vegetation to uptake soil contaminates in certain elevated �hot spots� that were identified in the Phase II Environmental Assessment.

Former Use: A railroad maintenance roundhouse occupied the southern portion of the Property from at least 1875 until at least 1904. An asphalt plant operated in the central portion of the Property prior to 1936 and included the utilization of two steel fuel oil ASTs and three steel asphalt ASTs. The northwestern portion of the Property (633-651 Spencer Street) was utilized by various manufacturing and commercial businesses between approximately 1904 and 1939 including Snell Motor Car and Truck Company and a ventilating apparatus manufacturer (in at least 1904), paint and varnish manufacturer (in at least 1925), an auto repair company (from at least 1930 until at least 1935), and a sign company (in at least 1939). The northern portion of the Property was occupied by Royal Manufacturing (furniture manufacturers) in at least 1895. The SSLSC operated in the northern portion of the Property from at least 1936 until at least 1951 and included the utilization of one gasoline UST. No documentation was identified regarding the removal of this UST from resources utilized during this Phase I PA. Haughton (a.k.a. Schindler Elevator Corporation) operated in the southwestern portion of the Property from at least 1920/1921 until at least 1990. In addition, outside coal storage and one UST were depicted on historical maps. No documentation was identified regarding the removal of this UST from resources utilized during this Phase I PA.
