Additional Property Attributes

This property made front page news in 2012 when containers storing several thousand gallons of hazardous materials were discovered during an inspection by local governmental staff. 8/2/2018 Update: An EPA removal action was performed. A limited cleanup was completed in May-June 2018 to eliminate one area of exposed contaminated soil, as well as to remove miscellaneous debris and potentially contaminated sediment accumulated on paved surfaces. During the remainder of 2018, it is planned to secure case closure from WDNR, as well as to conduct reuse planning using funding from the County's FY2017 EPA assessment grant. Former Use: This site is a former electroless nickel plating facility and consists of a two-story building in a mixed residential/industrial area, and within several blocks of three schools. Niphos Coatings opened in 1983 and operated until 2010, when the owner, Mr. Thomas Harju, closed the factory. Hazardous chemicals (sodium cyanide, nickel sulfate, copper cyanide, nitric acid and various plating wastes) were left in containers on-site when the property closed. On September 11, 2012, the US EPA ordered a time critical removal action to process, inventory, characterize and dispose of the hazardous waste (http://www.epaosc.org/site/sitrep_profile.aspx?site_id8171&counter18809) . Between September 11 and November 2, 2012, the US EPA removed thousands of gallons and several tons of waste from the building.
