Additional Property Attributes

In 2000, the Site's buildings were demolished and the site was redeveloped as a park, with outdoor basket ball courts and street hockey rink. An activity and use limitation (AUL) was implemented to minimize exposures to remaining contaminated site soils. Water, sewer, gas and electric are available along Somerville Avenue and utilities for the building are now connected to these existing utilities. The new enclosed public ice-skating rink building was constructed within the footprint of the former outdoor street hockey rink. Therefore,no new open spaces was utilized. This site is located in a dense urban area of Somerville, and there are no water resources or wildlife habitat areas on or in close proximity to the site. Prior to site development, the property was contaminated with metals and petroleum. The presence of these compounds presented potential health risks to adjacent and nearby residents via potential inhalation of particulates or direct exposure. Cleanup of the site eliminated and/or minimized these potential risks.

Former Use: The former Bay State Smelting Company, Inc. was located at this site. Several releases have been reported at the site and assigned release tracking numbers (RTNs) including RTN 3-11753, RTN 3-14924, RTN 3-15632 and RTN 3-16884. Extractable petroleum hydrocarbon (EPH), VOCs, and metals, including lead, arsenic, cadmium, chromium, were detected in soil samples collected from beneath and just beyond the former Bay State Smelting Building footprint. The highest metal concentrations were detected in the southwest portion of the site. A RAM was implemented and excavation activities were conducted from December 1997 through April 1998. Non-aqueous phase liquid (NAPL) was detected in the western portion of the site. NAPL removal was conducted. The RTNs were linked to RTN 3-11753, and a Class A3 RAO was submitted in September 2000.
