Additional Property Attributes

The Federated Metals site is a 1-acre triangular shaped piece of vacant property bounded by a greenway and shovel-ready industrial site, Enterprise Avenue, and a Conrail line, with the tip of the site at the Assunpink Creek. The site was used by Federated Metals Corporation and American Smelting & Refining Company (ASARCO) from approximately 1925 to 1980 for the refining of secondary metals to produce metallic zinc dust. Operations at the site included the use of two rail sidings along the northern portion of the site. All structures and buildings formerly located on the parcel were demolished in April 1995 and the lot was subsequently used for the collection and storage of demolition and construction debris by Transport Resources, Inc., until approximately September 2002, after which the lot remained undeveloped and vacant. The most significant contamination remaining at the site is petroleum from numerous underground storage tanks. The tanks have been removed, but impacted soil and groundwater remain and threaten the adjacent creek. Redevelopment of this property will make use of the existing rail infrastructure by redirecting the Conrail spur onto the adjacent industrial park. Existing greenway trails will also be leveraged, as a portion of the site will consist of a realignment of the Assunpink Greenway extension to better connect with the D&R Canal path and allow for better connectivity between the site and the adjacent industrial park. The remainder of the site will be paved to provide additional parking to serve the industrial park and to act as a cap for contamination that is left in place.
