Additional Property Attributes

Former Use: The Woodbury Coal Tar Site (the site) is located in Salem, Essex County, Massachusetts. The site is comprised of two individual parcels identified by the City of Salem Tax Assessors Office on Map Number 10-024, as lot numbers 36-0001 and 36-0006. The site is currently vacant. Lot No. 36-0001 (12 Woodbury Court) is an approximately 0.22-acre residentially zoned lot, which is currently vacant with no structures, and consists of uneven topography which is mostly overgrown with vegetation. Lot 36-0006 (41 Northey Street) is comprised of two parcels of land totaling approximately 0.48 acres and is owned by the City of Salem and known as Gonyea Park. The northern portion of the park consists of a small playground, while the southern portion is an open, grassy field bordered by a wooden fence. Beyond the fence, to the southwest, the property slopes downward to a block retaining wall at 12 Woodbury Court, and to the southeast, it slopes downward to the residential properties along Woodbury Court. These residences currently utilize the sloped portion of the 41 Northey Street property as their backyards. The site is bordered by an apartment complex known as Jefferson at Salem Station to the south; by Route 107 (Bridge Street Bypass) to the west; by Northey Street to the north; and by Woodbury Court to the east. The Salem Gas Light Company operated on the site in the 1800s. In 1994, a portion of the former facility was given to the City of Salem. During construction of a residence at 12 Woodbury Court (which abuts Gonyea Park) in 2002, contamination was identified. MassDEP issued RTN 3-21495 for the release at that property. Following the identification of coal tar-waste, and completion of a Phase II/III, at the 12 Woodbury Court property, EPA initiated assessment on the Gonyea Park site.
