Additional Property Attributes

The subject property is located on the south side of W. Chicago Road and the east side of Jefferson Street, situated approximately 200 feet to the east of the railroad tracks. The 0.39-acre parcel that comprises the site is developed with a single-story brick building constructed in the 1950s in the central portion of the property, and a more recently constructed pole barn building located in the southern portion of the site. The remaining portions of the subject property consist of an asphalt-paved parking lot, concrete sidewalks and grass-covered areas. The property has been used as a carpet store since 2005 prior to 2005 the property was used as various commercial businesses and several different gas stations since 1930.

Former Use: The subject property was developed with a residential home; depicted on the 1911 and 1923 Sanborn maps. In the early 1930s a gasoline service station was built at the subject property and owned by American Oil Company. The original gas station was previously located in the northwest portion. It was torn down and the service station building currently developed at the site was built in the 1950s, also occupied by Amoco Service Station and owned by Standard Oil Company. Miller Brothers Standard Service Station, owned by the Miller Brothers, operated the gas station from the late 1960s to the mid 1990s. The property was purchased by Eugene Melchi in 1996. The building in the southern portion of the site was built in 1996 as part of an auto glass service business. The auto glass service operation occupied the site until 2002 and remained vacant until it was purchased by Modert Enterprises LLC in 2005. The property has operated as a carpet retail store identified as Barnells Quality Carpets for the last eight years. Several environmental investigations have been conducted at the subject property since 1996 to obtain information regarding the potential impact of the historic use of the site as a gasoline service station.
