Additional Property Attributes

Site consists of one parcel of land located on the west end of Depot Street. Zoned commercial/industrial.

Former Use: The Hampden Steam Plant was originally developed from 1917-1918 by the Turners Falls Power and Electric Company to supply standby electric capacity during periods of low hydroelectric output at the Cabot Station in Turners Falls, Massachusetts. The planted started operating on September 8, 1918. The facility generated electricity on a regular basis during the 1920s and 1940s and was retired from operation in 1962. It was then sold on December 30, 1963 to Mr. Louis Margoles doing business as Merrick Metals. He obtained a permit from the Chicopee Board of Health to operate a demolition landfill at the site. According to City records, Mr. Margoles never used the property as a landfill and later sold the parcel to Sanifil, Inc. in 1971. City records indicate that Sanifil obtained a landfill permit in November 1971, but in December 1975, the Board of Health ordered Sanifil to stop landfilling because it had become apparent that the landfill was not being operated in compliance with state sanitary landfill regulations. The Board of Health received subsequenct requests from Sanifil to reinstate their permit, but the permit was not granted. In 1985, the City took the property for back taxes citing a threat to public safety from the vacant building. The City demolished the building in 1992 leaving a large portion of the building structure on site within the 40 foot basement of the building. Approval for this filling was received from the MassDEP prior to demolition. Since the City took ownership, multiple studies and redevelopment proposals for the site have been discussed, however the property has remained vacant.
