Additional Property Attributes

This parcel is part of a larger development effort that includes an additional 14 parcels including the historic Lyerlie Mill. The following RECs were identified during the completion of this Phase I ESA: The site was previously occupied by the Thorton Power & Light Company, Hickory Cabinet & Manufacturing, Duke Power Company and a city junk yard. These businesses utilized coal furnaces, gas tanks, service tanks and oil houses on the site. The historical use of the site presents a likely past release that could affect the environmental status of the site, and therefore would be considered a REC. Hickory Fuel Company, 10 3rd Street SE, currently occupied by Carolina Truck Brokers, is located to the west and hydraulically upgradient of the site. This facility is listed on the LUST, IMD and RGA LUST databases because a petroleum leak at the facility was reported on October 19, 1994, which impacted both groundwater and soil. According to the groundwater monitoring report produced in November 2013, there are three USTs located on the property. The existing USTs at this facility, the past release of petroleum to soil and groundwater, and its upgradient location relative to the site indicate a potential for a release of petroleum products which may impact groundwater at the site. Therefore, this facility is considered a REC. Elliott Knitting Mills and Piedmont Foundry & Machine Company was located to the south and hydraulically upgradient to the site from 1907 until the late 1990s. Historical operations on this parcel include metal working, iron scrap storage, coke storage, textile dyeing, chemical storage, knitting, boarding, finishing and the use of USTs. The propertys distance from the site, upgradient location relative to the site, and historical use indicate the potential for a past release of petroleum products or hazardous substances which may impact groundwater at the site. Therefore, this facility is considered a REC.

Former Use: The site consists of one parcel located in Hickory, Catawba County, North Carolina (site). The site is approximately 0.27 acres located at the 200 Block of Main Avenue Way SE, and is currently vacant and unimproved. Based upon historical research, the site has been developed for commercial and industrial use since at least 1907. The site was occupied by the Thorton Light & Power Company from at least 1907 until prior to 1919. The Hickory Cabinet & Manufacturing company occupied the site from at least 1919 until prior to 1944. The Duke Power Company occupied the site from at least 1944 until prior to 1961. A Sanborn Fire Insurance Map depicted a city owned junk yard on the site in 1961. The site is currently owned by the city of Hickory.
