Additional Property Attributes

Former Use: Number of Parcels and Acreage - Two entire parcels and the western portions of two larger parcels totaling approximately 11 acres. Number of Building(s) and Square Footage - One wooden park pavilion (square footage unknown) and two former building foundations. Current Property Use - Closed city park. Standard and other historical sources were able to document that the first developed use of the subject property occurred in the 1820s with the subject property serving as a steamboat landing. Between 1830 and 1832, a horse-drawn railway was developed on the property to connect the landing to the nearby town of Tuscumbia. Steam locomotives replaced the horses in the 1830s and the property was developed with a train depot and warehouses used to store cotton and merchandise. The subject property was also used in the 1820s and 1830s as part of the Trail of Tears, where the Cherokee and Creek Indians were placed on steamboats for travel out west. The subject propertys warehouses, and possibly the depot, were destroyed during the Civil War between 1862 and 1865. Following the Civil War, the property was relatively vacant until 1917 and 1918 when it was redeveloped with three buildings associated with U.S. Nitrate Plant #1 for the production of munitions. Historic maps depict a railroad on the property that extended to another portion of the nitrate plant to the southeast. The nitrate plant used an experimental process known as the Haber Process to extract nitrates from the air to create ammonium nitrate for munitions. According to newspaper articles, the plant did not meet production goals and the plant was closed in January 1919. The closed plant remained on the property in a stand-by capacity until 1941 when the equipment was removed and the property abandoned. The property has remained relatively vacant with a park pavilion and two former building foundations since that time. The associated city park has been closed approximately ten years.
