Additional Property Attributes

Former Use: The shoreline of the subject property has reportedly been filled for stabilization over the years, starting as early as the late 1920's and continuing through approximately the late 1940's and early 1950's. The southeastern portion of the subject property has been utilized by Carlson Fisheries for their commercial fishing and retail sails operations since the 1940's; the northwestern portion of the Carlson's Fisheries building actually encroaches onto the subject property. This encroachment area of the subject property has housed underground storage tanks (USTs) and above ground storage tanks (ASTs) to store various fuels used by the fishing boats, as well as to heat the Carlson Fisheries building. The USTs and ASTs were located in an exterior fenced area along the west wall of the Carlson Fisheries building. The subject property was purchased by the current property owner in the 1950's for the operation of the Manitou Transit Company, a company that ferries people to the Manitou Islands by boat. The subject property is still used for the operation of the Manitou Transit Company. Since this time, the subject property has remained developed and is operated by the Manitou Transit Company and, in the encroachment, by the Carlson Fisheries business. The Wings and Things building remains on the property and is leased to the National Park Service, who uses the building to sell permits to visit the Manitou Islands.
