Additional Property Attributes

The field investigation took place in October 2014. At this time, the data indicates that a small area that was once used as a firing range has lead and other heavy metal contamination that will have to be addressed. At this time, it appears that the remainder of the site remains relatively clean. Once the Phase II report is complete, and the site is enrolled in the site remediation program additional information can be added at that time.

Former Use: The area to be investigated is approximately 150 acres located at 1125 North Collins Street in Joliet, Will County, Illinois. The property is located northeast of the intersections of Collins Street and Woodruff Street. Near that intersection, and not included as part of this investigation is a former women?s prison and Illinois Department of Law Enforcement?s DNA Laboratory. The property is bounded by Woodruff Street to the South and Collins Street to the West. Dartmouth Street and residential properties border the northern boundary while residential properties border the eastern portion of the property. The far eastern portion of the investigative area is mostly wooded and is elevated approximately 20 ? 40 feet above the quarry ponds. The remaining portion of the property is a mixture of woods and grass that contain several piles of fly dumped material including concrete, slag, tires, and drum carcasses. There are two abandoned firing ranges located within the south-central and east-central portions of the property. The firing ranges were used until approximately two years ago. Currently, the firing ranges are overgrown with weeds and small trees. The Joliet Correctional Center has a storied history that dates back to 1858. In that year, prisoners were used to quarry limestone from the property that was used to construct the walls and buildings of the prison. The quarried limestone resulted in two ponds (estimated to be 5 acres and 9.5 acres in size) that still remain. The construction of the initial prison was completed in 1869 and remained active until March 2004. Although it was part of the prison property, the east side of the Joliet Correctional Center property did not house any prisoners. The property was used for gardening, baseball field, rock quarrying, a firing range, and possibly a cemetery. There are no activities that currently take place on the property.
