Additional Property Attributes

Former Use: The current property owner, Mr. Doug McAlexander, is from Marshall County and worked as a fireman for the City of Holly Springs for 16 years. He and his brother bought the Old Compress Building in 2012. He said that construction of the buildings onsite started in 1918, but it was not completed until 1944. Sanborn maps indicate the first phases of construction on the southern portions of the property were in place by 1902. On the north end of the complex there is a metal building that replaced the wood structure that collapsed. The building was late 1970s construction, and there was reportedly a city water main under the new metal building. The main building is a vacant warehouse-type structure that encompasses approximately 142,500 square feet on an approximately 6.4 acre parcel of land. The building was constructed in several phases at different times using different materials. The older portions of the building to the south were wood with wood floors on pier and beam supports. The central portion of the building had concrete foundations with wood ceilings. The northwest portion had a concrete foundation with steel. The northeast portion was not accessible due to heavy vegetation and building collapse. The wooden floors and/or roofs were collapsed in many locations. The building was formerly heated with a natural gas-fired boiler and then an electric boiler, but Sanborn maps indicate coal was used before 1959. Two or three dilapidated metal sheds are located on the northeast portion of the site. Three bulk fuel terminals were formerly located on the northeast portion of the site from about 1902 to 1960. The Phase I was performed for the entire site as one unit. The Phase II was split into three areas: A - northeastern area where historical terminals were located; B - interior of building; and C - exterior perimeter of building.
