Additional Property Attributes

The Chalkyitsik dump site contains soil and surface water contamination in excess of applicable cleanup standards. Additional Site Characterization is warranted to completely define the limits of contaminants of concern and identify areas of polluted soils for future remediation. The continued use of this site as an open dump is not a sustainable use for this location. The site is not a permitted, engineered and lined landfill and several years of waste disposal has impacted the soil and water with contamination and created a visual impact to the environment. Recommendations for the future include developing a waste separation and disposal program within the community and determining how best to remediate the existing dump site in accordance with State of Alaska � Division of Solid Waste Class III Landfill requirements.

Former Use: The subject property, comprised of roughly 4.0 acres within Section 12, Township 21 North, Range 18 East, is located on the western side of Chalkyitsik outside of the developed portion of town. According to local residents the dump site has been used for up to 40 years.
