Additional Property Attributes

Former Use: The target property was developed for commercial use by John Schuette in 1849, making this property one of the earliest commercial developments in the City of Manitowoc. Due to the collapse of the inner-city industrial sector during the later portion of the 20th Century, Manitowoc lost a significant number of manufacturing jobs, and combined with the influx of discount stores and shopping malls, the Schuette department store closed in the mid-1990s. Recent attempts have been made to redevelop small portions of this commercial cornerstone in Manitowoc. However, significant renovation is needed to restore the commercial viability of the property. Unfortunately, renovations are being complicated by the likely presence of lead based paint, asbestos containing materials, and other hazardous substances present in building materials.
