Additional Property Attributes

The property has been redeveloped into a mixed use complex, with 80 market rate apartments, commercial retail space, and underground parking. Remaining green space on the parcel will become home to an ongoing summer concert series.

Former Use: This property consists of two parcels. It was formerly used for residential purposes, a library, school, saloon, bakery, knitting factory, church, and wagon yard through the late 1800s. By 1903, the original H.C. Prange Company retail department store was present on the northwest corner of the property, and the remainder was used for residential purposes. Throughout the years, the department store expanded and by 1955, the store building comprised the majority of the property. The southernmost parcel housed the department store building, which included a bake house (likely a restaurant), underground switch board and transformer vault, and boiler room for heating purposes. The northern parcel was used for surface parking and as a private garage and warehouse. The H.C. Prange Company first opened the department store in the late 1800s. Retailers occupying the building changed through the years, with the most recent occupant being Boston Store. The City of Sheboygan purchased the property in 2014, demolished the building, and currently uses the site for municipal functions such as festivals.
