Additional Property Attributes

Following initial site reconnaissance and review of a report produced by EPA's START contractor. Sampling and Analysis Plan for Phase II assessment was issued in March 2015. The plan calls for surveying of the mine tailings area and adjacent creek, and collection of samples from the tailings, underlying soil, surface water, and creek bed sediment. Site assessment was completed under a Brownfields SAP in 2016. The assessment identified measured the extent, depths, and volume of uncontrolled tailings that erode into Revais Creek at high water, and confirmed active recreational use of the tailings area. The tailings contain arsenic up to 10 times the applicable recreational exposure threshold, and copper over 1,000 times the Ecotoxicity threshold applicable when tailings erode into the creek. A Cleanup Plan has been prepared with plans to remove 3,004 cubic yards of tailings and 1,050 cubic yards of native soil beneath the tailings.

Former Use: The site was part of the Revais Creek Mine Complex from 1910 until 1949. The tailings area is likely associated with the Drake Mine, which in 1941 had a 50-ton mill. The Drake Mine, which mined for copper, was idled when the mine shaft ran into a fault. The tailings area is currently a non-vegetated area approximately 0.75 acres in size. Greenish precipitate (likely copper) is visible at the surface of the tailings area. There is evidence that the site is used recreationally as a paintball course.
