Additional Property Attributes

This site is on the City of East Chicago?s priority target list for redevelopment within the next 3-5 years. Redevelopment of this property is anticipated to generate additional jobs for the community in the near term, and based on its location is suitable for manufacturing use. Former Use: Review of all available historical resources and information indicates that the Subject Property was initially partially developed with commercial businesses and residential buildings in 1915. The Subject Property gradually became developed with more buildings and businesses from 1915 until the 1960s. It should be noted that the potential exists for these buildings to have formerly used underground heating oil tanks for heating. Throughout the 1960s, the area began to experience the effects of depopulation and as a result, many buildings were demolished and became vacant land or parking lots. By 1970, all the former structures on the Subject Property had been demolished and the Subject Property became a paved parking lot for the Inland Steel Plant until 2000. Stockpiled debris was apparently first present on the Subject Property in 2010. The Subject Property has retained this configuration and is currently used as parking for the East Chicago Water Department. In addition, fill material from an unknown source was reportedly brought to the Subject Property sometime in the early 1970s. The large Arcelormittal industrial complex, or its predecessor company (Inland Steel), has been located north of the Subject Property since at least 1939. The immediately adjoining properties have primarily consisted of commercial businesses and residential dwellings. The water tank located southeast of the Subject Property is apparent by 2012.
