Additional Property Attributes

This property started as an assessment project and is now a cleanup property. An EPA clean up grant was awarded 10/01/2005. The cleanup was completed on November 2008.

Former Use: Mill building dating back to 1800s; manufacturing of gold jewelry, textiles, and Carter underware (by the Gemini Company) The former Gemini Corporation manufacturing property (the Site) is located at 33 Morris Street in Springfield, Massachusetts. The property historically consisted of the Gemini Corporation manufacturing building (the Building), which were several one- to four-story interconnected brick buildings totaling approximately 72,000 square feet on a 0.85-acre property. The Building included a boiler room, bleach room, machine shop, carpenter shop, main factory areas, and separate transformer building. The Building was destroyed in a fire in December 2003 and the damaged Building was subsequently demolished. Until the December 2003 fire and demolition, the Building covered a significant portion of the property and the remaining areas were paved. A partial basement was present under the main building area. The basement floor was at grade on the south side of the main building and approximately eleven feet below grade at the northern edge of the property. The northern parking area is topographically elevated relative to the lower (southern) parking area. The City of Springfield currently owns the property and acquired it in October 1997 from KSH Enterprises, Inc., through non-payment of taxes. The property was developed in the late 1800s to early 1900s and was used for textile/clothing manufacturing throughout the early 1980s. According to a city directory review, a portion of the property was occupied by the William Carter Company, a textile/clothing manufacturer, as early as 1912 through 1970. The city directory indicated that the Gemini Corporation occupied the property in 1976. Since the City of Springfield obtained the Property in 1997, it has remained vacant.
