Cover Technologies (e.g., Capping) Immobilization Process (e.g., Encapsulation, In-Situ Solidification)
Shallow test pits were dug, free-flowing pine tar was then treated with Portland cement, covered with soil and compacted. The soil cover was constructed of clean soil, 12-inches thick. The source of the clean fill soil was on-site soils, using both topsoil and clay subsurface soils observed to be minimally impacted with pine tar. Based on the previous site assessments, the cover meets the recreational standards. The soil cap was then hydroseeded.

Additional Property Attributes

Former Use: The Upshur County Youth 4-H Camp was originally developed and occupied by the Buckhannon Chemical Company, which was incorporated in 1908 and dissolved in 1935. The facility manufactured charcoal, wood alcohol, and calcium acetate until about 1930 when the plant was reportedly abandoned and salvaged. The tar pit area was utilized as a disposal area for wastes generated by the plant. Use of the property between the closure and abandonment of the plant in early 1930s and when the property was sold to the Upshur County Farm Bureau in 1942 was not clearly determined in previous reports. In 1945, the property was deeded to the Upshur County Courthouse. It was initially developed and used as the Upshur County 4-H Camp in that time period, and today continues to be used as the Upshur County Youth Camp. The site will now be used as an archery range and open space during camps.
