Additional Property Attributes

The property is comprised of six, river-front parcels on the Grand River in downtown Grand Rapids. Current property used include parking lots (northern three parcels) and vacant, currently undeveloped land (southern three parcels).

Former Use: By 1888, the Property was developed with a man-made canal, a saw mill, Valley City Basketworks, a furniture manufacturer, a sash, door, and blind factory, and associated sheds/outbuildings. By 1912, the western portion of the Property had been filled, a Grand Trunk Railroad track had been constructed along the western Property boundary, and a railroad spur extended onto the western portion of the Property. The southern portion of the Property was developed with furniture and milling companies. The Property addresses listed at various times between 1912 and 1933 indicated the presence of a grain and milling company, piano company, furniture company, cabinet shops, an elevator company, and electric manufacturing and supply company. By 1950, the canal had been filled. Between 1950 and mid-1960s, the Property was occupied by a beer warehouse, dairy equipment sales and service company, a furniture company, an electrical supply business, a rubber supplies business, a motel, and an industrial equipment warehouse. The central portion of the Property was used as a parking lot after buildings began to be razed by 1969. The beer warehouse was razed in 1987 and replaced with a parking lot, and the motel was razed in 1996 and replaced with a parking and vacant land. The property has been vacant (the southern portion) or used as parking lots (northern portion) since 1999.
